``PANESTAKING" work was the only way to describe the delicate outdoor operation at Wollongong City Council chambers yesterday.
The Mant Glass crew took almost an hour to replace a 270kg window panel at the front of the building after it was damaged a few weeks ago.
It measured 4m by 2m and presented quite a challenge for the five-man team.
A crane and a vacuum lifter were on hand to ensure the job went smoothly and without incident.
Peter Deliseo from Mant Glass said the sheer weight of the panel made the job difficult.
He said the toughened glass had to be made in Melbourne because there was not a furnace in NSW big enough to do the job.
The window panel was removed after a large crack appeared in early May.
A council spokesperson said the damage was the result of natural movement of the building.
``It was taken out and boarded up as a safety precaution until the glass could be replaced," she said.
